TRAFFORD Metrovicks Rugby Club got a major boost ahead of the Rugby World Cup when chairman, former Partington resident, Greg Hawkins was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queens Birthday Honours List.

The award was for services to Rugby Union in the North West.

The club is proud to have Greg as its leading influence and his commitment over a number of years has established Trafford MV as a well structured community sports club.

Pre-season training starts on July 2 and conditioning sessions are already under way.

MV's 1st XI will once again challenge for promotion from North Lancs Div One after a disappointing 4th place finish last season, Ben Wheeler has taken over as captain with Sale Grammar School teacher Stuart Crampton the head coach.

MV will also be fielding a senior colts XV this season in the Raging Bull North West Colts League Div A.

They are looking for any 16-18 year olds who want to play competitive rugby at a good standard. Training will begin once exams are over and for info please contact Wilf Dooley 01942 884542

The club is also currently looking to recruit cricketers of all abilities to add to their playing squads for their three senior male teams, the women's XI and also for their U11 and U12 junior teams.

Trafford MV is keen to encourage people in year round sporting activity as rugby and cricket provide sporting opportunities in all seasons.

On July 17 Metrovicks will host a Friday Night Lights 10 a side tournament featuring teams from local clubs as well as invitation sides competing to a floodlit Final.

The club will also have pre-season friendlies against Bowdon, Manchester and Windermere during August.

The club continues to add to its excellent asset base with a newly laid, resurfaced and drained floodlit training pitch.

A new Gaelic Football pitch and work begins at the end of June on a new build community room which will provide improved hospitality facilities for home and away teams, new kitchen area, toilet block and meeting areas.

The room will also be available for community use and hire.
