THERE was plenty of reasons for Sale Silverbacks CC (Over-40s) side to celebrate last week as they picked up only their second win in eight years defeating Urmston by four runs.

Sale made 124-3 in their 20 overs, Mark Rowe and Iain Harrop both making 33 retired with helpful support from Paul Battersby (20) and Nigel Davenport (24 not out).

In reply, Paul Hanrahan bowled well with 3-17 and Urmston needed 12 from Ian Holland’s last over but in a thrilling climax they could only get eight.

Elsewhere, Sale 1st XI remain unbeaten with a winning draw with Cheadle Hulme which saw them extend their lead at the top of the Vivio Cheshire County Cricket League Division One table.

South African Ryan Rickelton (68) and Ian Dixon (26) once again got Sale off to a good start.

After the openers departed Tyrone Lawrence then took control scoring a run-a-ball 74, well supported by Keith Wellings (35) as Sale closed on 248-6.

Rick Halkon grabbed an early wicket before Cheadle Hulme ralled to 92-4 at drinks.

Captain Chris Canning had to ring the bowling changes and Halkon returned for a second spell and immediately got danger man Iftikhar Naseer well caught in the deep by Jon Hall.

Sale sensed victory, but the home wicket is proving to be one of the best surfaces in the county, with only one more wicket falling as the game petered out to a 13-8 points draw in favour of Sale.

Earlier in the week Sale had secured their second cup win of the season beating Didsbury by 15 runs in the T20 cup.

Rickelton (83) and Lawrence (47) saw Sale rack up 187-3.

Ali Barrowman and Halkon took two wickets apiece as Didsbury finished on 172-7.
