SALE United FC Under-16s won the Timperley and District League Cup beating league champions Wilmslow Sports 3-1 in a thrilling match.C

It was a remarkable achievement for the team as they were contesting their second final in three seasons.

The two teams were evenly matched at the score was 0-0 at half-time.

But in the second half, Sale piled on the pressure and after several chances finally took the lead, when winger Stephen Clayton scored from 20 yards into the top right corner of the net.

Wilmslow equalised from a rare counter attack, but with five minutes left and the tie looking to be heading for extra-time, central midfielder Byron Duncan scored an outstanding 30-yard free kick to make it 2-1.

Shortly after Sale added another from 25 yards making it a 3-1 win for Sale.

A spokesman for the club said: "It was a great all round team performance.

"We finished third only a few points from winning the league.

"Our team had the best defensive record in the league, played 21 matches and only lost twice.

"Byron Duncan's great form has resulted in him being signed by Sky Bet League One side Crewe F.C - which is an outstanding achievement.

"Our manager Tony Beck has praised his team's amazing season which is full of talent with other players who he believes are capable of being scouted and progress to semi-professional football."
