TRAFFORD MV made the journey to Garstang on the back of a six-match unbeaten run and following a polished performance in victory over Didsbury Toc H the previous weekend.

However, the side was weakened after a number of players pulled out at the last minute and it told, in the end, as MV fell to a 30-21 defeat.

Trafford still managed to make a strong start to the game and dominated the opening quarter, looking very dangerous with ball in hand. Pacey winger James Matthie rounded the defence for the opener and front row prop Jack Gobbert crashed over from close range to enforce MV's early pressure.

Conversions from Pat Eccles put MV 14-0 in front, but they lost their focus and poor concentration allowed the home side to claw their way back into the game.

MV got the wrong side of the referee and decisions seemed to go against them as Garstang went into the break with a 17-14 lead following a penalty and two converted tries.

The trend continued in the second half, when there was little cohesion in the visitors as their work rate dropped off.

Garstang maintained their momentum seeing an upset was on the cards and MV had no answer.

A further two tries helped the hosts to a bonus point and a late penalty gave them a much deserved win.

MV's young number eight ?????? offered some hope with yet another powerful display and a second half-try, but he needs the support of his team-mates to make the most of his potential.

Trafford must now regroup ahead of Saturday's visit of North Manchester, kick off 2.15pm. Commitment to the cause must be greater if they are to finish in the top half of the table this season.

Big games lie ahead and current form will see MV second best in these games if big improvements are not made.

blob MV's under-16s had another impressive performance in the Lancashire Cup, beating defeating Leigh 29-21 to progress into the next round.
