Stockport Georgians CC – 1st XI – 171 all out

ASHTON on Mersey fell tantalizingly short of promotion despite a fine win at Stockport Georgians.

Knowing that only maximum points would give them a chance to finish in the top 2, Ashton attacked from the start, posting a quickfire 190 with major contributions from Alex Turner (65) Pratik Kumar (39) and Graeme Thomason (32). Matt Grace took the bowling honours with 7/50.

In response Georgians tried to see out the game, with a grinding 50 from Hayden Bailey setting the tone. But by rotating the bowling and taking the chances when they came, Ashton eventually broke the home team resistance. Mike Roberts completed a fine season with 4-41, with Josh Knowles posting 3-29.

But as promotion rivals Bollington also got full points against Romiley, Ashton had to settle for 3rd place in the league at the end of an excellent season for their young side.

The mood was lifted by news of a league securing triumph by the Ashton 2nd Team who beat Georgians second team at the Beets. Georgians 131 all out (Ryan O’Brien 5-17) Ashton 134-3 (Tom Scott 70 not out). Ashton’s title comes at the end of an excellent season for the club at all levels.
