TONY Hand’s title defending Manchester Phoenix endured a painful pre-season loss to local rivals Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday night.

Phoenix, who only practiced together for the first time on Thursday evening, travelled to Sheffield on Friday for the first leg of the pre season ‘War of the Roses’ challenge games and came away with a 3-3 draw heading into Sunday.

But the visitors’ lengthy pre season campaign was clear for all to see during the return leg in Altrincham with the home side 3-0 down at the end of the first period through goals from Jeff Legue (x2) and Lubomir Korhon.

Michal Psurny reduced the deficit early in the second period but that was as close as the home side got as tired legs were apparent and two games in three nights took its toll.

Korhon was allowed to skate the length of the Altrincham ice unimpeded before slotting past an out of sorts Steve Fone in the Manchester net. Steeldogs’ Craig Elliot made it 5-1 before the second break.

With little way back for a tired Phoenix, Korhon notched his hat trick goal with a breakaway effort whilst the Phoenix were on the powerplay – rubbing salt in the wounds.

Phoenix captain Luke Boothroyd said: “All credit to Sheffield, who looked sharp and clinical all night. We will get into intensive training next week and will be ready for the start of the league campaign on Saturday against Bracknell.”

Meanwhile Tony Hand has swooped for his final import for the new campaign with the signing of Swedish defenceman Johan Burlin.

The 25 year old hails from Skelleftea, Sweden and last season iced for Fassa in the Italian Serie A notching 18 points in 38 games.

He has also played for his home town Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League whilst also having spells in Russia and Germany.

Burlin said on joining Phoenix: “I have not heard much about the league but I come here to play and do well for the club and the fans. I know about Manchester and have come for the weather. I play a strong two way game and can be physical when I need to be.”

Phoenix start their title defending campaign this weekend with a trip to Bracknell Bees’ before the home opener against Swindon Wildcats on Sunday.
