ASHTON On Mersey were crowned Cheshire Cricket Shield winners in a dramatic game that rounded off a winning weekend double.
Facing Derbyshire and Cheshire League Champions Hawk Green, Ashton bowled and field superbly to restrict the visitors to 180 (Mike Roberts 6-46).
In reply opener Graham Thomason hit a rapid 52. But a mid-order collapse saw the home side reduced to 95-6 before Paul Eastham recorded an unbeaten match winning 77. Ashton won with one wicket to spare in the final over.
The day before Ashton recorded an emphatic victory over Hale Barns. The visitors lost early wickets before Bilal Ahmed’s 47 saw Hale Barns through to 116.
Ashton strolled to victory in just 17 overs (James Lines 46)
Ashton go into the final week of the season needing a win at Stockport Georgians to stand a chance of the final promotion slot.
Ashton’s 2nd XI remained top of the Division A table with a win at Hale Barns. Hale Barns 99 all out (Mark Weighill 3-11, Rob Hedge 3- 19) Ashton 101-2.
