URMSTON anglers have been narrowly pipped to pole position by a team including England Internationals in a 10-a-side competition.

The contest took place on August 10 as part of National Fishing Month, which aims to get people from all cultural and social backgrounds hooked on the sport.

The All Stars, captained by Paul Hughes, triumphed in ‘appalling’ weather but it was Urmston’s Carol Knight who reeled in the biggest catch at 17lb 10oz .

Urmston Anglers member Bill Lynch said: “Maybe now the England manager will look towards a lady member for the England team.”

England manager Mark Addy caught the second biggest fish weighing 16lb 04oz, with Urmston’s Wilf Griffin claiming third place with a catch weighing 15lb 10oz.

Urmston, captained by John Lynch, scooped 98 points to the All Stars’ 112, the close call making the lure of victory even stronger.

Bill said: “Roll on the next match when hopefully the weather is kinder.”
