ASHTON on Mersey drew a dramatic run-filled game on a record-breaking day for the club’s opening batsmen, in the TACS Partnership Cheshire Cricket League Division One.

For the first team, Alex O’Gara (110) and Alex Turner (108) put on a 225-run partnership as the home side rattled up a massive 276 total before declaring.

Meanwhile the second team openers, batting first at Lymm Oughtrington Park CC went even better with teenagers Will Turner (132 not out) and Ryan O’Brien (110 not out) posting a club record unbeaten opening partnership of 260.

But both teams failed to force the win.

The first team went to the brink despite a superb counter attack by Simon Grove who rode his luck for Malpas to hit 106.

All results were possible going into the final over with Malpas getting to within three runs of victory with only one wicket left.

Chris Wardle took the bowling honours with 3-55 while Luke Turner made it a fine day for the Turner household with 2-54.

The second team found Lymm in fine batting form as Jon Carson’s 50 saw them to safety as they finished on 195-4.

With five games to go Ashton firsts remain in third place in the league while the second team lead their division.
