Bowdon lose to fellow strugglers

THE Cheshire County Cricket League was badly hit by the weekend’s wet weather.

In the Premier Division, Oxton made it two wins in a row after outplaying fellow-strugglers Bowdon by 60 runs in Wirral.

Chris Cashin top-scored with 52, aided by Shaaiq Choudhry, 32 in Oxton’s 171-9, Matt Tully returning a handsome 6-32 off 14 overs. Earlier in the season, the MGS student had taken 6-6 against Oxton to win the April./May Performance of the Month award.

Apart from Pat Ashling, 55 and Stephen Ball, 27, no Bowdon batsman reached double figures against the relentless attack of Gayan Fernando, 5-38 and Glenn Querl 4-25 and they were all out for 111.

Not a ball was bowled in the First Division with all six fixtures being cancelled due to heavy morning rain.

This means Cheadle stay top with 239 points, followed by Didsbury, 230 and Macclesfield 225. At the bottom the table shows Middlewich 119pts; Widnes 115pts; Brooklands 65pts.

Urmston’s 17 year-old leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson has won the league’s June Performance of the Month award with his 8-86 return in an ECB Premier League game against Hyde.

Parkinson, the 2013 Young Player of the Year, led the Premiership wicket-takers with 41 victims up to July 12.

He has represented Staffordshire this season as well as playing in Lancashire age group teams.

He will receive a framed certificate and sports voucher donated by Canterbury Sports.
