ALTRINCHAM’S Laurie Williams suffered heartache as the Great Britain women’s basketball team lost a 53-41 to world champions USA.

After securing a place in the quarter-finals of the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship with a third place finish in Pool B, the team returned to court to battle it out against the USA, for a place in the semi-finals.

It was the USA who got off to the best start as they raced to a 6-0 lead within the opening three minutes. With just over six minutes left in the quarter, Helen Freeman fired home a great basket to put the GB Women back within four points (2-6).

The third quarter saw Great Britain come out strong as they closed the gap down to five points and held it there with shots from Laurie, Judith Hamer and Clare Griffiths; a basket from Freeman then shrinking the USA’s lead to only three points with just over six minutes played (28-31). However, the American side answered the threat as they then shot to a 38-30 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
