ASHTON on Mersey came agonsingly close to winning a dramatic game at Brooks Drive.

Batting first Ashton’s top order batsmen punished anything loose but when Tom Scott (55) and Alex O’Gara (48) both fell to spinner Tamoor Malik the Ashton middle order failed to capitalize on the good start.

Malik finished with fine figures of 5-56 and bowling in tandem with the evergreen Dave Saddington (2-42) Ashton were restricted to a below par 169.

In reply opener Rob Phelen and Joe Mahon kept the home side in the hunt but the introduction of spinner Mike Roberts saw new problems posed to the batsmen and he removed both Phelen (49) and Mahon (40).

With 9 wickets down the match went into the last over with all results possible. Ashton’s hopes were dashed when a hard hit chance was spilled by skipper Mark Duncan who badly damaged his hand in the brave attempt to win the game for the visitors.

The classy Roberts once again proved the bowling pick with 6-47.
