A GIRLS football team in Stretford has won a top regional sports award.
Longford Park Juniors girls team has been named Metrolink’s Team of the Month after giving a strong performance in training sessions and demonstrating a positive culture.
The Team of the Month award was introduced by Metrolink and the Manchester FA to inspire young footballers with a premiership attitude for clubs at every level.
Longford Park Juniors recently started holding girls-only training sessions with the club's FA qualified coaches at St Margaret Ward School, in Sale.
Thanks to a positive response from young girls in the community, there will be an U10s girls’ team taking part in matches against local teams in early 2014.
Longford Park Juniors currently has eight teams involving both boys and girls ranging from ages five to 10.
Nathan Lowe, team manager for Longford Park Junior Football Club, is very proud of the girls’ team for all their effort.
He said: “The girls thoroughly deserve this award. Not only are they 100 per cent committed to succeeding and winning matches, they are also dedicated when practicing and meeting once a week for training every Saturday.
Peter Cushing, Transport Director for Metrolink, was pleased to give Longford Park Juniors this award.
“First rate performance and an exemplary attitude make them a great example to others and I wish them well for their very first season as a team.”
