Ice Hockey - Manchester Phoenix 3-2 Bracknell Bees (After Penalty Shots)
DEFENCEMAN Robert Schnabel helped Manchester Phoenix back to winning ways by netting a penalty shot decider on Sunday.
The teams went through seven rounds of penalties before the ex NHL defenceman finally found a way past Bees Alex Mettam whilst Phoenix’s Steve Fone saved all seven attempts from the visitors.
Frantisek Bakrlik opened the scoring mid way through the opening period with a powerplay goal but Grant Rounding brought the Bees level before the first break.
Man of the match James Archer fired in a one time finish from a Robin Kovar pass to give the home side the lead once more late in the middle session but again the visitors responded with a powerplay goal from Sam Oakford taking the game into overtime.
And with the Bees prevailing in the shootout the previous night in Bracknell, Phoenix were determined to gain revenge and did so once Schnabel hit the back of the net.
Tony Hand’s side remain top of the table with a point lead over Basingstoke Bison and two points ahead of Guildford Flames.
