10:00am Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in Sport
TRAFFORD made it four wins on the run on Tuesday night with a superb 2-0 victory over high flying Skelmersdale United at Shawe View.
The visitors were slightly on top in the opening stages with a Matty Hughes volley after just three minutes being blocked by Trafford’s 17 year old keeper Kieran O’Hara.
Home skipper Nia Bayunu then defended brilliantly as Nick Rogan broke clear down the middle and Rogan went close again in the 24th minute when he headed wide after Trafford had failed to clear a free kick.
Shelton Payne twice went close as Trafford came more into the game and Garry Vaughan’s side forged ahead in the 37th minute when Michael Oates slipped an exquisite pass into the path of Omar McKenzie who blasted a great shot into the roof of the net via the underside of the crossbar.
Trafford were now on top with Andy Smart firing a free kick into the side-netting and Michael Oates shooting weakly at Zac Hibbert following a mazy run by Rory Fallon.
Skem started the second half strongly with Shaun Holden firing a powerful ground shot that O’Hara saved with his legs. Robert McIntosh then struck a sweet half volley that O’Hara saved superbly and at the other end McKenzie rifled a drive inches over following good approach play by Shelton Payne.
The home side were now in control once more and in the 62nd minute Steve Mason was desperately unlucky when he clipped a shot against the crossbar Shelton Payne drilled a shot just over and then appealed vainly for a penalty after a brilliant run into the Skem penalty area.
The points were secured in the 88th minute when the immaculate O’Hara set up an attack with a quick throw, the ball was fed to Shelton Payne and he cut inside to deliver a clinical drive inside the near post.
An enthralling game came to a close with Trafford deserving the three points and now looking forward to their long trip to Grantham on Saturday.
