Football - Droylsden 1 Trafford 5
11:27am Monday 16th September 2013 in Sport
TRAFFORD roared into the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup at the Butcher’s Arms on Saturday courtesy of a sensational five goal haul by Shelton Payne.
There was little to choose between the teams in the opening stages with Trafford winger Bradley Anderson firing in a drive in the 4th minute that was held by Yannick Nlate and visiting keeper Tom Read holding a half volley by Dylan Moloney.
Read pushed a Domaine Rouse effort past his near post before Shelton Payne opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he collected a Paul Ashton pass and drove the ball past Nlate via a slight deflection.
Trafford were now well in control and should have doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Anderson sliced his shot against the crossbar from close range.
In the 36th minute Shelton Payne made it 2-0 with a breath-taking goal, collecting the ball in midfield and slicing through the home defence before slotting the ball cooly past the advancing Nlate.
Andy Smart twice went close to increasing Trafford’s lead with free kicks but the visitors went in at the interval more than happy with their two goal lead.
The opening minutes of the second half saw Droylsden forcing Trafford onto the defensive and Lewis Killeen and Adnan Ahmed both went close to reducing the arrears.
In the 55th minute Dylan Moloney broke clear down the middle but with only Tom Read to beat he fired carelessly over the crossbar.
Five minutes later the tie was as good as over whn Bradley Anderson broke down the right and found Payne in acres of space, the quicksilver striker calmly rounding the keeper and side-footing home to complete his hat-trick.
Dylan Moloney then broke clear down the middle but was denied by a last ditch tackle by Nia Bayunu and from the resulting corner Porya Ahmadi rose unmarked to power a header into the roof of the net and make it 3-1.
In the 72nd minute a lightning quick breakaway ended with Payne firing against the foot of the post but two minutes later a carbon copy move saw Payne collect the ball and rifle a magnificent drive into the roof of the net from 15 yards.
The scoreline quickly became 5-1 when, in the 76th minute, Payne once more found himself in oceans of space, rounded Nlate and cooly tapped the ball home.
To their credit Droylsden battled gamely to the end and in the 86th minute Trafford centre back Steve Mason was adjudged to have handled inside the penalty area. However, Tom Read came to his rescue with a brilliant save low to his right from Moloney’s sweetly struck spot kick.
In the last minute Shelton Payne should have notched a sixth goal when he once again found himself in the clear but was perhaps over-confident with an attempted chip that was gathered by Nlate.
Despite this, Payne and the Trafford team were absolutely delighted both with the victory and performance and can now look forward to the Draw for the Second Qualifying Round on Monday.
