TWO goals by striker Ryan Robbins gave Stamford a shock 2-0 win over Trafford in their Evo Stik League Premier Division clash at Shawe View on Saturday.
There was little goalmouth action in the opening stages as Trafford dominated possession with their short passing game while the visitors relied on the long ball aimed at their speedy front line.
Home midfielder Martyn Andrews blasted a volley just wide from the edge of the penalty area in the 23rd minute and a minute later Robbins low drive was comfortably held by Tom Read.
In the 29th minute Trafford were unlucky not to take the lead when Andy Smart’s wickedly curling free kick from the right rebounded into play off the upright.
The home supporters were stunned just seconds before half time when Stamford took the lead, Robbins breaking clear in the inside left position and slotting the ball past the advancing Read into the far corner.
Trafford’s second half performance was desperately disappointing as they never got going and it was Stamford who created the better chances.
A fine move by the visitors in the 66th minute ended with a Dan Lawlor shot that was brilliantly tipped past the post by Tom Read and then Stamford skipper Richard Jones found himself completely unmarked at a left wing corner but thankfully headed into the side-netting.
Trafford centre back Nia Bayunu then cleared a Robbins shot off the line as the Stamford dangerman rounded Read but in the 71st minute the visitors doubled their advantage when Robbins broke away and struck a fine ground shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
The home side were stirred into action and in the 74th minute Shelton Payne cut in from the left but shot weakly at goalkeeper Alex Lynch. Kamahl Whight then screwed a shot well wide from 15 yards and the game ended with Stamford’s defence gallantly blocking efforts by Martyn Andrews and substitute Liam Shipton.
