Trafford girls meet Olympic legend Victoria Pendleton
6:15pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
OLYMPIC gold medallist Victoria Pendleton made a surprise visit to see young women who attend the sports programme Us Girls in Trafford.
The cycling champion called into one of its four bases in the borough, at the Talbot Centre, Stretford.
Pendleton then spent the afternoon playing football, handball, netball and fitness workouts with the young women, as well as presenting a £2,000 National Lottery Award for best sports project.
The funding will help the programme continue its work with young women in disadvantaged communities.
The young athletes the cycling star met included Amber Brooks, from Sale, who takes part in Us Girls sports sessions at the Tuf*C club every week. Along with other volunteers and project leaders, Amber had the chance to ask Pendleton questions about her sporting career and the London 2012 Olympics.
Amber said: “We’d voted for Us Girls in the National Lottery Awards but had no idea that the programme had won or that Victoria would be coming down, so obviously we were really excited.
“It was amazing to meet such an inspirational sports star and we even got some great training tips from her.”
Pendleton said: “It has been great to see how this project is bringing sport to the doorstep of young women across England where there is limited or no access to activities or facilities.”
Us Girls is a female-only sports programme led by national sports charity StreetGames.
The club runs from four locations across Trafford - at Old Trafford Sports Barn, Stretford Leisure Centre, Sale Leisure Centre and Partington Leisure Centre.
