Ashton-on-Mersey CC – 1st XI – 70 - lost to Hale Barns 1st XI – 71-2

ASHTON on Mersey’s promotion prospects ended as they crashed to an eight wicket defeat at home to Hale Barns.
The decision to bat first in an attempt to capture maximum points backfired dramatically as the home side disintegrated against a fine Hale Barns seam attack.
Andrew Davison and Mike Berks found the right pace and length to exploit the conditions and a procession of Ashton batsmen failed to come to terms with the challenge.
The home team were dismissed for a paltry 70 runs with Davidson taking 7-25.
In reply the Ashton bowlers seemed to have learned little from their opponents efforts, as a series of loose deliveries got the visitors off to a flying start.
By the time the change bowlers came on the cause was lost and Hale Barns got to their target within 20 overs.
This was an uncharacteristic performance from an Ashton side which has delivered much to be admired this season.
Next week’s visit to Winnington Park will be an opportunity to demonstrate their true capabilities.
Ashton 2nd XI fared no better at Hale Barns, losing by 7 wickets in a low scoring game. Ashton on Mersey 103-9 (Hutton 5-25) Hale Barns 103-3 (Dean 51 not out).
