Stafford Rangers 1 Trafford 4
11:05am Sunday 25th August 2013 in Sport
TRAFFORD produced a magnificent performance on Saturday to thrash Stafford Rangers 4-1 and move into fourth place in the Evo Stik League Premier Division.
Garry Vaughan kept faith with the side that had been narrowly defeated at Blyth on Tuesday night and they responded by dictating play from the start and creating a great chance after just seven minutes when Rory Fallon broke clear only to be thwarted by a brave save by Jon Brain.
Brain produced further saves to deny Andy Smart and Shelton Payne but was powerless to prevent the visitors from taking the lead in the 22nd minute when poor defending allowed Andy Smart to volley home from 20 yards.
Trafford were pegged back just three minutes later when a weak goal kick by Tom Read fell to Fabrice Kasiama and he fed the unmarked Michael Lennon who fired into the bottom corner from 15 yards.
Trafford were undaunted by this setback and once more dominated play with Martyn Andrews, Rory Fallon and Cedric Krou controlling the midfield.
Nia Bayunu saw his goalbound header cleared off the line, Krou rifled a drive over from 35 yards and then Payne and Oates both missed glorious opportunities as the home defence came under incessant pressure.
In the 39th minute Shelton Payne was desperately unlucky to see his superb curling drive cannon back into play off the crossbar and the first half ended with Nia Bayunu heading a Smart corner inches over the crossbar.
The second half began with Rangers slightly on top for the first time in the game and in the 49th minute Tom Read saved a Michael Lennon volley at the foot of the post. Danny Quinn then pulled his shot wide of the far post and Jack Langston volleyed over before Trafford re-asserted their authority and dominated once more.
Cedric Krou shot weakly from 15 yards and substitute Ali Nsangou almost scored with his first touch but Brain blocked his shot at the near post.
The under-pressure keeper saved from Shelton Payne in the 66th minute but could do nothing to prevent Trafford taking the lead sixty seconds later when Payne fed Andy Smart and the powerful left back struck a magnificent drive into the top corner from 25 yards.
Steve Mason curled a shot over shortly afterwards but in the 80th minute Ali Nsangou made it 3-1 with a hard and low drive into the bottom corner from just inside the penalty area.
Substitute Bradley Anderson squandered a great chance to make it four when he broke clear down the right but shot weakly at Brain and in the closing minutes Trafford keeper Tom Read produced two neat saves to deny Kasiama and Lennon.
However, in the 90th minute Shelton Payne gave the scoreline a more realistic look when he gained possession out on the left, cut inside and struck a superb curling drive inside the far corner.
The final whistle arrived to signal a tremendous victory for a Trafford side that has settled quickly to the demands of the Evo Stik League Premier Division.
