ASHTON-on-Mersey High School’s Haydn McCullen has gained selection for the England Boys golf team who will defend the home internationals at Lincolnshire’s Forest Pines later this month.

Haydn, 17, this year became the first player to win both the Lancashire boys and senior championships in the same season Haydn who plays at Delamere Forest and St Anne’s Old Links, also finished sixth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and has played on the England U-16 team for two years.

Another outstanding young player, Luke Donnelly, was in superb form at Ashton-on-Mersey posting 44 points to drop his handicap to six and give him a two-point edge over Brian Lewis and another junior Dan Leigh.

Midweek Stableford action at Mersey saw Steve Marsh in top spot with 39 points, two more than Oliver Jones and Alan Booth.

Sale junior Ella Rawthore showed her talent with a club record haul of 48 points to take the coveted Joanne Morley Trophy and reduce her handicap by six shots.

Next in on 39 points was Yvonne Chadwick with Sophia Casey, Caroline Glain and Annette Pilling all on 37.

In a Greensome at Sale for the new Centenary Trophy Tony Ball and Charlie McIntyre are the proud first holders.

They posted 45 points to finish ahead of Martin Hannam and Kenneth Blair 44 and Steve Price and Howard Johnston who won a cpo on 43 from Dave Moore and Paul Bolter.

Davyhulme Park’s men played for the Hector Gerogeson Trophy and division one hot shot Mark Wardle took the trophy with his nett 64.

Winning the other divisions were Scott Birchall 65 and Andy Howat also 65.

Dunham Forest’s men showed their skills in a Four Club Stableford with P Abbott on top with 37 points from L Barnett 36.

Hale’s men were in singles Stableford mode with Cliff Wright in control with 41 points from Richard Hogben 39 and John Adams and John Kennedy, both 38.

Hale’s ladies played a Stableford for the Lady Captain’s Charity and Caroline Massey led in with 38 points, two more than Val Nelstrop, Diana Hogben and Cally Taylor.

The Manchester and District Ladies Bell Cup has reached the last eight when the quarter finals will be played at neutral clubs with the last four going on to finals day at Greenmount GC in September.

It is the biggest inter club competition of its kind in the country with nearly 90 clubs in the original entry.

Hale have enjoyed success in recent seasons and they pulled of a superb derby win by 5-2 over Ringway to book a date with Dukinfield.

Also through are Dunham Forest who had a great 4-3 win over a very competitive Ashton-under-Lyne who reached finals day in 2012 and will now play Buxton and High Peak who beat holders Sandiway in round three.
