Trafford 10K road race
10:41am Tuesday 12th March 2013 in Sport
ALTRINCHAM and District Athletic Club organised the annual Trafford 10K road race from Partington Leisure Centre on Sunday morning.
The race is a flat one lap course around Dunham Massey and is ideal for runners wanting to achieve personal best times.
There were a record number of finishers in this year’s race with 745 runners completing the course on a very cold morning. The runners faced a bitterly cold head wind in the early stages and there was a threat of snow which fortunately failed to materialise.
Two competitors broke the 30 minute barrier with Richard Weir of Derby AC finishing in 29.51, eight seconds clear of Ben Fish of Blackburn Harriers. There was a Welsh 1-2 in the women’s race with Non Stanford of Swansea Harriers finishing first in 32.41, 40 seconds clear of the 2011 winner, Ava Hutchinson of Cardiff AC.
First home for Altrincham was James Reed in 21st place and there were prizes for Ken Burgess, first over 70, and Jean Dolan, first lady over 65, while Bev Ganose was second woman over 45.
Ken established a club M70 record of 41.46 while Jean bettered her club W65 record of 51.12, which she set at Silent Valley in Northern Ireland last September, by more than two minutes.
The prizes were presented by former Olympic Marathon runner Ron Hill, who celebrates his 75th birthday later this year. He completed this race in 56 minutes.
It was organised by Dave Norman and Bill Egan and more than 50 marshals ensure it went smoothly.
