Workington 2 Altrincham 1
1:03pm Sunday 17th February 2013 in Sport
An eight-game unbeaten run either side of Christmas had put Altrincham in a strong position to claim one of the promotion play-off places. But, now, this second defeat in a week to opposition in the lower reaches of the table, has jeopardised that hard-won place.
Having lost at Histon last Tuesday, Alty started Saturday's game at Workington brightly enough.
Indeed, Duncan Watmore had a great chance to fire them into a fifth-minute lead but he missed the target from Nicky Clee's pass in the fifth minute. However, the youngster was Alty's brightest light and it was his pace, trickery and control which brought about three of the four bookings received by Workington's players in this match.
But it was the Cumbrians who took the lead in the 16th minute. A ball was played up to McLuckie who got the better of Alty's Danny Hall before laying the ball off, to his right, to the Reds' captain Jonny Wright. He fired a low shot past Stuart Coburn into the net.
However, straight from the re-start, Altrincham worked the ball to the other end, with Jake Moult striking an equaliser from the edge of the box less than a minute after the visitors had fallen behind.
The second half suffered a slight delay to its start when Alty midfielder Carl Rodgers was taken ill at the interval and Patrick Lacey had to make an unscheduled substitute appearance. But it was the home side who had the better of the second half as Altrincham struggled to pose much threat to Workington's debutant loan goalkeeper, Joel Dixon.
A wonderful dribble into the box led to Workington's McGee hitting the Altrincham goalpost as the Reds looked the more likely to score. They finally did so in the 88th minute when Wright was left unmarked at the back post from Boyd's left-wing corner. His well struck drive beat Coburn to give the Cumbrians three deserved points.
Next up is another match against a team at the wrong end of the table, when Alty entertain Colwyn Bay at Moss Lane next Saturday.
