MV defeat Mossley Hill
2:01pm Tuesday 12th February 2013 in Sport
ON a very wet pitch Mossley Hill came to MV and put up a strong effort as MV struggled to get a grip on the game.
Early exchanges were even and Mossley opened the scoring with a well struck penalty, MV quickly negated that with a penalty of their own from No 10 Ben Wheeler.
With the score level both sides competed well for territory and Wheelers positional kicking was making the difference, relieving pressure and making good ground in attack.
MV's back line showed glimpses of their ability but the elements were against them with a slippy ball and unfirm footing causing fumbles.
MV eventually opened up a gap as openside flanker Pete Broadbent, whose mobility around the park was impressive, burst through the visitors' defence after sustained MV attacks to crash over the line. Wheeler converted for a 10-3 lead.
MV were never home and dry and Mossley Hill continued to press through the pack and almost levelled the game with a good break which saw MV full back Gaz Bevan make a superb last ditch tackle to halt the attack.
MV came back from this and pressure on the visitors line saw a sin binning leave the visitors with 14 men.
MV kept up the momentum and Broadbent again turned up out wide to create the extra man and again cross the white line, Wheelers conversion made it 17- 3. Trafford were now in a position to see the match out and a late penalty again from Wheeler settled the score at 20-3 and gave MV the league points to push them up a place to 5th in North Lancs Div One.
MV's 2nd lost at Rossendale 19-8 and the 3rd XV played out a thrilling 38-32 home defeat by Christleton.
This Saturday MV travel to Hutton which will be the sternest test to date in 2013.
