THIS clash of the top two sides in League North 1 West was a breathtaking encounter between two teams going head to head at the top of their game, in a relentless pursuit of victory.
The game had everything – early points for Sale, a comeback from Vale of Lune, the lead changing half a dozen times, and a moment of individual brilliance that secured Sale the win and top spot in the league.
Vale conceded early penalties and Sale’s Scott Redfern put them 9-0 up in 13 minutes.
The Lancaster side responded with a try from James Hesketh converted by Moore, and he added a penalty to give Vale the lead on the half hour.
An exchange of penalties ensued before Danny Waddy touched down for Sale and Redfern added the conversion for a 19-13 lead at the break.
In the second half the contest continued unabated. Vale went ahead again on the hour with a converted try but Sale responded but without success until in the final minutes winger Kevin Penny raced into the Vale half, kicked over the defensive line and collected the ball at full pelt to touch down under the posts.
Redfern added the conversion and despite a late attack from Vale the home side held out for the win.
