Altrincham 1 Workington 2

ALTRINCHAM'S nine-match unbeaten run ended in disappointing fashion at Moss Lane with this defeat to lower-placed Workington on Tuesday.

Yet, despite a much improved second half from the Robins, the game was lost in the first 45 minutes when the Cumbrians were by far the better side.

Three early goal threats from the visitors served as a warning which Altrincham failed to heed. Workington finally took the lead after 24 minutes when the lightning-quick Mwasile took advantage of a sliced clearance by Scott Leather, which allowed the Morecambe loanee winger to get behind Alty's left-back.

Goalkeeper Stuart Coburn made a fine save from Mwasile's first effort but could not stop the winger firing home the rebound.

Altrincham would have been flattered to get to half-time just a goal adrift but an added-time penalty converted by Arnison made sure there was a merited two-goal margin for the visitors at the interval. Arnison had been upended by Havern as he burst into the box to concede the spot-kick.

The second half saw Altrincham belatedly getting forward but it was not until the 69th minute that they pulled a goal back. It came when, what seemed to be a misdirected shot from substitute Duncan Watmore, fell to Damian Reeves who converted from close range.

Though Alty kept pressing, the visitors came closer to scoring as, twice, the woodwork kept out efforts from the lively Mwasile.

Alty's Danny Hall picked up a fifth caution and a suspension to compound Alty's disappointment.

ALTRINCHAM: Coburn, Densmore (capt), Hall, Havern, Leather; Richman, Moult, Lacey, Clee; Lawrie, Reeves. Subs: Greygoose, Brooke, Mitchley, Watmore and Mitchley
