A DETERMINED Urmston mum of two has swapped her comfy slippers for running shoes and inspired an army of fellow women to pound the streets and join her fitness movement.

'Solemother', the brainchild of primary school teacher Grace Lees, has spurred on women to get on their active gear and take motivation from this unique community minded venture.

Grace, 39, said: “Solemother is all about getting active, staying safe and being social. I want women to gain encouragement, strength and motivation from each other to get out there.”

Grace explained how having two young children meant inflexible gym timetables and park run dates didn’t always work. She had always struggled to fit in exercise around the demands of family life.

"I hated being inactive and kept having failed attempts at doing something for myself, " she said.

"The idea of Solemother was to free women up, to give them someone to run with at a time that suits them. It's harder to back out when you've got someone relying on you! It's a great motivator."

And it seems there was an army of women out there who agreed. With more than 170 women already having signed up, the group is growing from strength to strength.

"I'm no running expert, " she went on. " It's taken me this long to get a proper sports bra!

"Together though I feel we are achieving great things. Every step taken is a step towards a healthier life. I'm in awe of what these women are accomplishing and to witness the positive effect this is having on women's minds and bodies – and their families' too."

Fellow Solemother Soo said: "I've been for runs in groups, with just one other, with speedy runners and newcomers. It's an incredible social experience as well as being good for your soul and health. What's not to love?"

New runner, Wendy, said: "Solemother has changed my life for the better. I get to go out safely on the evening of my choice at a time that suits me. The bonus is I get to know other like minded mums who would otherwise have been just another anonymous face at the school gates."

The group is also supporting breast cancer awareness month.
