RESIDENTS fighting to prevent Flixton’s green belt from being built on are stepping up their campaign by holding a crunch public meeting.

The campaigners - from Flixton, Urmston and Davyhulme Future Planning on-line group - are fighting town hall proposals to build houses on swathes of land in Flixton, including the William Wroe Golf Course site, as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF).

They have had their own survey carried out by independent planners to identify potential alternative sites for development in the borough.

This survey has now been completed and the group's planners, Urban Imprint, is to present its findings at a public meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday, August 23 at the John Alker Club, Flixton Road, Flixton.

Numbers are limited so any residents wanting to attend this meeting need to email fuadfp@outlook.com detailing the number of places they require.

A spokesman for the group said: "We had identified that the only way to oppose Trafford Council’s proposals to build on the William Wroe site was to fight fire with fire.

"We duly employed our own independent planners to review the GMSF to prove that the selection of this site was inherently flawed, was completely unsound in planning terms and completely against the wishes of the vast majority of Flixton residents.

"This meeting is the result of the biggest outcry in living memory when many determined residents came together to fight for what we value and cherish."

But leader of the council, Cllr Sean Anstee, has claimed the council is acting to protect green areas.

He said: "The Greater Manchester Spatial Framework is about controlling development in such a way that maximises protection of our green areas.

"If we did not put in place this plan then development decisions would be taken out of our hands with the potential for ensuing a development free for all."
