A YOUTH club for children with learning disabilities has been set up in Urmston.

The club has been set up by speech and language therapist Claire Owens, who established the new club at Cheeky Cherubs Community Centre, on Victoria Parade.

Claire said: "I am local to the area and had worked in a special needs school for 11 years before helping establish the club for children with learning disabilities and their siblings, which is also gives parents a place where they can meet and relax knowing they are cared for in a fun and safe environment.

"As far as I am aware, we don't have anything like this in the local area, so please spread the word about this fabulous youth club and make it work, as we feel Urmston was always missing something like this."

The club activities included pool, X Box games, disco, table-tennis, trampoline, darts, Lego sessions, sensory room and crafts.

Claire who held a recent session explains: "I don't know who enjoyed the youth club more, the children or their parents!

"To start the session, we had fun in the soft play area interacting with one another, played darts, we socialised by having our tea from the cafe, we went up on the roof top and enjoyed going on the bikes, trampoline and playing with the bats and balls, we then finished the evening off by having a mini disco.

She adds: "Our club is aimed at children with learning disabilities/siblings and also chance where parents/careers can meet, chat and relax knowing they are in a safe/fun environment.

The two hour sessions, which are held on a Friday (term time) cost £2, and between 6pm and 7pm cost £1.

The centre is situated at Unit 1, Higher Road and for more information telephone 0161 971 6692
