A KNITTED portrayal of The Last Supper featuring Jesus and the 12 disciples has been knitted by Urmston resident, Juanita Smith, to celebrate Easter.

The figures, which measure eight inches in height, took Juanita – known as Jan – about two months to knit and feature miniature goblets, plates and a basket as well as grapes and bread made from baked clay.

The portrayal will be on display at St. John’s in Irlam Road, Flixton for the foreseeable future and people are welcome to view them at the Easter services on Good Friday (April 14) at 7.30pm or Easter Sunday (April 16) at 10.30am.

Said Jan: “I got the idea from seeing a similar portrayal in a Spanish church. I felt it was divine intervention that I had witnessed them and decided I must produce one for St. John’s, which I have attended with my husband for over 20 years.

"I’m not normally a knitter, preferring arts and crafts instead, but I felt very strongly that God was calling me to produce this work for local people to see. The congregation at St. John’s are extremely friendly and community-minded and were delighted with the finished product.”

The Rev Peter Thorn, vicar of St. John’s, gave his enthusiastic support to the portrayal and said he looks forward to welcoming visitors to view the display.

The Rev Rodney Green, associate minister of St. John’s, said: “Easter represents the most significant time in the Christian calendar and highlights the importance of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ after the crucifixion. Jan’s unique portrayal of The Last Supper communicates in a very artistic way a vital part of that event. People are very welcome to join us at any of our Easter services to see the artwork close up.”
