AN Urmston family have decided to venture out and start their own upcycling and vintage shop – and the gamble is paying off.

Mandy and Lee Boud opened Winston and Ivy’s Vintage Emporium, lovingly named after their two French bulldogs, in Princess Road, last month.

The duo have been upcycling furniture for some time but decided to turn their passion into a business.

Lee, a 38-year-old self-employed handyman, and Mandy, who worked at a school, took the leap of faith and are now running the business with son Joe, 25, and daughter Molly, 22.

And a ‘community vibe’ is high on their priority list.

“The opening day went amazingly well, and everyone commented on what a lovely vibe the shop has, which was so good to hear,” said Mandy, 47.

“I am a great supporter of local independent traders and we had lots of positive feedback from people saying how nice it is to see a business that is not a chain.

“Urmston is rapidly changing, with lots of new families moving into the area and I would love to be part of those changes, moving towards a stronger sense of community.”

The shop stocks items such tables and chairs, mirrors, dressers, coffee tables, lamps, vintage scales, traditional china and tableware, as well as handmade cushions and aprons.

It has also started a free book exchange, supplying free books for both children and adults on a "bring a book, take a book" basis. A "Creative Community" board has also been set up, so that residents with a creative talent can advertise or even display goods, from cake makers to knitting enthusiasts.

“We can't believe the fantastic positive response we have had so far,” said Mandy.

“As well as selling our furniture in its natural state, you can literally come in, pick a piece, pick the paint, choose the handles and leave the rest to us. This will mean you have a totally bespoke piece and something very personal to your home and your own tastes.

“Alternatively you can buy beautiful pieces exactly as they are for that true vintage feel. We can also upcycle your own furniture. Most people have a treasured piece of inherited furniture that they would love to update and we can do this for you if you wish.

“We have had customers requesting specific items and we are happy to do our best to find them. So far we have sourced an oak headboard which we hand painted for a customer, a vintage drinks globe with decanter and glasses, a vintage telephone and other items. It is so rewarding to know a customer has something unique that they love.”
