POLICE have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to after an elderly woman’s purse containing her wedding ring was stolen while she was in a Trafford supermarket.

The 82-year-old woman was shopping in Aldi in Eden Square Shopping Complex, Urmston, on October 25 when her purse was stolen sometime between 3.40pm and 4.40pm.

It is believed the offender distracted the woman by pointing at items on the shelves, then unfastened her handbag and removed her purse, which contained a quantity of cash and her wedding ring.

The victim realised it was missing when she came to pay at the till.

Police Constable Luke Dearing said: “This was a cruel distraction theft where the offender has targeted a vulnerable lady and stolen her purse from inside her handbag.

“Not only has she lost an amount of money, but she has also lost her wedding ring, which is obviously of great personal value to her.

“I am appealing to anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV still images to please get in touch, as we believe speaking with him could allow us to make significant progress with our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and quote the reference number 1578 of 25/10/16, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
