AN Altrincham Market-type food hall could be on the cards for Urmston.

Plans to redevelop the existing Urmston Market site, in Railway Road, have been submitted to Trafford Council.

Luxury developers Villafont are seeking to renovate the site with a new market proposal which will ‘exploit the popularity of local markets, as already demonstrated by the new Altrincham market’.

A new food hall would sit adjacent to the current market hall and on the existing market stalls site.

The hall would include a central dining area with shared tables, surrounded by a number of bars and food stalls. There will also be a covered area for the provision of a retained and improved artisan market. The Market Co started running a monthly artisan market at the site back in June.

The market proposal forms part of a hybrid planning application. Developers also want to erect three new homes on the site, on a piece of land between Greenfield Church and a terrace row of houses on Primrose Avenue.

The houses, which would also be in a terraced row, would all offer four bedrooms, as well as a smaller bedroom/study.

They will be three-storey, with the second floor being developed in the roof space in keeping with the scale of the existing terraced houses.

All three will have front and rear gardens and six parking spaces will be created.

The planning document states: “The proposal is intended to rationalise and create a longevity for the commercial uses through the refinement of the existing market site.

"The residential component will also be a facilitator for the generation of the market and as such may be phased to deliver capital to the adjacent market scheme.

“The outdoor market can continue to operate on the reduced site whilst the housing is delivered.”

Urmston councillor Joanne Harding tweeted her support of the proposal.
