THE father of an Urmston man who died in a ‘tombstoning’ accident two years ago is to take on the Three Peaks Challenge in his memory.

Darrell Teal, who was 22, died on July 21, 2012, after jumping from Devil’s Bridge, in Kirby Lonsdale.

Described as an ‘adventurous and sporty man’, Darrell had visited the spot with friends when he decided to jump from the bridge above the River Lune.

It is believed Darrel had jumped 30ft into the water, but did not resurface and his body was found a short distance downstream by rescue crews some hours later.

On July 18, almost two years today since the tragedy occurred, Darrell’s father Shaun will take on the famous Yorkshire Dales challenge in aid of Kendal Mountain Rescue, which were in attendance the day Darrell died.

Shaun will be joined by colleagues from Proctor and Gamble, where he works and where Darrell had been an apprentice for three years.

Shaun, who has two other children, hopes to raise money as well; as awareness of the dangers of jumping from height into cold water during the summer months.

“I still read reports of similar tragedies on almost a weekly basis and my heart goes out to the families of those involved because I am well aware of the pain involved and how it just does not go away or become any easier,” he said.
