Peel Energy appeals planning refusal for biomass energy plant in Davyhulme

PEEL Energy is to appeal against Trafford planning chiefs' decision to reject its scheme for a biomass energy plant in Davyhulme.

The move comes seven months after the controversial scheme was unanimously thrown out by the boough's planning committee, over fears about the effect it would have on public health.

The application provoked a massive backlash, with the Breathe Clean Air Group spearheading the campaign to oppose it.

Peel wants to build a power plant - known as the Barton Renewable Energy Plant (BREP) - on land near Barton Bridge. It would burn biomass materials, the majority of it waste wood, to generate electricity for 37,000 homes.

Announcing the decision to appeal, Peel Energy's project manager, Jon England, said: "It is accepted that the UK needs to develop a balanced mix of low carbon energy generation infrastructure to tackle the challenge of providing secure and affordable renewable energy, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"In view of this, the BREP proposals deserve the highest level of consideration through a public inquiry.

“A public inquiry will provide an opportunity for us to present the evidence we believe will demonstrate that the site is a suitable location for a biomass-fuelled renewable energy plant.”

The Breathe Clean Air Group pledged to continue the fight.

Chairman Pete Kilvert said: “This is a flagrant lack of consideration to build and operate a waste incinerator in a densely populated area.

“This incinerator has got to be stopped - because if we don’t, we will be stuck with its pollution for the next 25 years.”

Leader of Trafford's Labour group, Cllr David Acton, said: ''I am appalled at the news that Peel have appealed against the unanimous decision of Trafford planning committee.

"Although legally Peel Holdings are able to appeal the decision, I think it is morally outrageous that they seem to dismiss the feeling of thousands and thousands of residents who live in the Davyhulme, Urmston and Flixton area, and dismiss the unanimous view of the elected members.

"Residents have been really worried about the serious health effect that they feel such an incineration plant will have on the area. It is clear that there is already high pollution in the area with the motorway and constant streams of congested traffic on the local road network, Trafford Park and Trafford Centre nearby.

"This plant would add to the pollution which people experience in this heavily populated area.

"I and residents will fight this appeal with the same commitment and vigour which we fought the original planning application. I call on Peel to see sense and withdraw the application now."

The people of Trafford, especially Urmston and Davyhulme MUST get behind BCAG and support the continued efforts to stop this monster blighting our lives. Urmston WILL die; people WILL try to leave, but will be UNABLE to do so because NOBODY will want to move IN.

Not only will this incinerator have stolen our lives, but our livelihoods and all that most of us will have worked for all our lives, namely our homes, and the right to freeedom of movement as described in the European convention on Human Rights!

Peel Energy are exercising their right to go to a public inquiry - which Dave Acton admits.

The scheme has been considered by both politicians and experts at local level and there was a divergence of views about its merits or otherwise.

Effectively the proposal will now go before an impartial arbiter. That seems fair enough.

What's in it for YOU then, Rick57?

The location for this proposal by Peel is clearly wrong. It's in a densely populated area with a reduced chimney stack height (due to its proximity to Barton airfield). It's already been thrown out by Trafford and it should stay that way.

Should have known that Peel would totally ignore the local people and council and go ahead with there plans to pollute the area and add even more traffic congestion to the area, they do not give a **** for anyone or any thing as long as there is more money for them to get their grubby little hands on. Anything Peel wants to do in the future we should all make sure that we object to it and give them as much trouble as possible.

Who gives a toss what a bunch of Urmston NIMBYS are moaning about. How can you spoil an area that stinks of sewage all the way through the summer and is about as aesthetically pleasing as a turd?

Manhatten, if you are actually from Urmston, then you probably know very little about the place, so sling your hook to somewhere "nicer"! Oh, I forgot! You cannot sell your property until the proposed incinerator is decommissioned, by which time you will be 25 years older, but not necessarily wiser.

Then again, you don't live in Urmston - don't bother visiting the place, after all it offers you nothing!

ModernMG, if you've got a point then make it.

I won't bother visiting Urmston, because as you point out it offers me nothing.

If you can't sell your house, it's nothing to do with the incinerator, it's because Urmston has nothing to offer and stinks of sewage.

Manhatten, you made my point for me - YOU don't live in Urmston - I need make no further comment!

Well you'd better get used to it ModernMG because it's coming.

Urmstom already has enough pollution with the sewage works and the methane plant and that is why we do not need any more pollution from the incinerator. There are plans to build another 6 in trafford and the next one hopefully will be right next door to your house.
