United Utilities says Flixton Road in Urmston should re-open by the end of April
2:00pm Thursday 19th April 2012 in Urmston
ENGINEERS are making good progress in the painstaking task of repairing a sewer pipe in Urmston town centre that was accidentally filled with concrete.
A specialist team flown in from Ireland has now removed all the concrete from the sewer in Flixton Road and is confident the road will reopen as planned, by the end of April.
The pipe became blocked in February after someone mistakenly poured concrete into the sewer.
All of the damaged pipe has been removed and replaced and work will start soon on repairing the road.
Ian Fullalove, United Utilities wastewater manager, said: "We’ve now overcome the major engineering hurdles we faced and fingers crossed from here on in the job should be relatively straightforward.
"We have aimed for a while to have Flixton Road open by the end of April and that remains the case. We’re confident we’ll hit that target.”
He added: "We’d like to again thank the traders and residents in the area for their patience while this work has been carried out. It’s not been easy for them to go about their daily routines but we’ve done everything we can to keep them informed and try to make life as normal as possible in the circumstances.”
United Utilities teams have been in Urmston town centre on a regular basis, speaking to people and traders.
Flixton Road remains shut at its junctions with Station Road and Roseneath Road.
