DAVYHULME Primary School were crowned school league champions with goalkeeper Ashley Higginbottom hailed the hero of the hour after saving three goals in a thrilling penalty shootout.
The school made it to the finals in the annual end of season clash in the Urmston and District Primary Schools’ League which pitches the most successful small school from the league against the most successful large school.
Representing the larger schools, Davyhulme found themselves up against nearby neighbours Woodhouse Primary in last Thursday evening’s match.
The game, played at Davyhulme Primary’s playing fields, went to penalties after a last minute equaliser by Woodhouse with just 30 seconds to go made the scoreline 1-1 at full time.
After extra time the game remained locked at 1-1, with Davyhulme keeper Higginbotham going on to save three spot kicks in the ensuing penalty shoot-out.
“I am proud of the team and how they approached the game with respect, enthusiasm and teamwork,” said Davyhulme PE teacher Lee Parkinson afterwards. “They’ve worked hard and deserve this success. The game was played in a great spirit and was a great advert for the league,” he added.
