PRIMARY school football teams from across Trafford went head-to-head last week to decide who’d represent the borough in a Greater-Manchester wide tournament.

The Trafford Primary FA's annual district tournament kicked off at Davyhulme Primary School on Thursday with a dozen schools from all over the borough competing for the honour of a place in the Greater Manchester Finals later this year.

Teams were split into two groups with the top two from each qualifying to a semi final and then final.

Davyhulme and Stretford’s St Hugh of Lincoln topped group A, while Sale’s Wellfield and Brooklands qualified from group B.

Hosts Davyhulme relied on a golden goal winner to book their place in the finals with Brooklands, which they eventually went on to win after a nail biting penalty shoot out.

“The players were ecstatic and thoroughly deserved the win,” said Davyhulme teacher and coach Lee Parkinson. “They played exceptionally well and worked really hard throughout the tournament.”

Davyhulme will now represent Trafford at the Greater Manchester finals which then feeds to a North of England finals, the final two winning teams then thrashing it out at Wembley in the National finals.

“If the team continue with the determination and hard work they showed in the Trafford tournament we will have a really good chance in the next round,” added Lee.
