A TRAFFORD MP has expressed ‘shock’ after a Davyhulme councillor complained that a voter ‘shouldn’t be voting’ because he had learning difficulties.

Messenger understands that a Conservative, Davyhulme West ward councillor made the comments at the Woodhouse Primary School polling station yesterday evening.

Stretford and Urmston MP, Kate Green, complained to Trafford Council - which has launched an official investigation.

Ms Green said: “I was really shocked to hear that a Tory councillor in Trafford complained that a voter with learning difficulties 'shouldn't be voting’.

“I'm pleased to hear that Trafford Council has asked for a full report into the incident; however, much more needs to be done about inaccessible polling stations and poor attitudes towards disabled voters’ right across the country.”

A spokesman for Trafford Council said: "Trafford Council can confirm it is aware of the situation and that its returning officer, Theresa Grant, was notified last night.

"She immediately launched a full investigation.

"Trafford Council endeavours to make sure all residents who are eligible to vote, have the opportunity to do so."

All three seats in the Davyhulme West ward are currently held by the Conservative group, but the seat currently up for re-election and held by Cllr June Reilly, is not thought to be safe.

The result of yesterday’s local elections will be announced later today.
