BAKERS from an Urmston cake shop were awarded first, second and third place at the Cake International showcase, held at Event City.

The sugarcraft, cake decorating and baking show, which was opened by baking queen, Mary Berry, on March 7, attracts cake enthusiasts and renowned industry experts from around the world.

It is not the first time Emma Ball and Hannah Rostern, who work at Richard’s Cakes, on Flixton Road, have been honoured at the event, but their boss Richard Day is as delighted as ever.

“It’s a great achievement, it’s got interest globally,” said Richard.

Emma, 31, who has worked at Richard’s Cakes for 15 years, won first and second place in the Decorative Exhibit category for her ‘How to Train your Dragon’ and ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ themed cakes.

While colleague Hannah, 23, took third place in the Wedding Cake category with her realistic castle cake, which was made up of 4,017 stones which Hannah made by hand.

And clearly the cakes are as big a hit with celebrities as they are with the judges, as former England cricketer, Andrew Flintoff, picked up a children’s birthday cake from Richard’s last week.

But Flintoff is not Richard’s only famous customer, having once made a cake for David Beckham, as well as Jason Manford, various Corrie stars and others.
