NEARLY 200 Trafford school children with special needs put their best foot forward to raise funds for the victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack.

The youngsters from Manor Academy in Sale and Pictor Academy in Timperley - who are part of the Sovereign Trust - took part in a two-mile fun run.

The head of physical education at the Sale School, Andrew Grainger, said the children have a range of educational special needs and it was a huge step for some to take part.

The pupils' efforts have raised hundreds of pounds for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

Year 9 pupil Connor Donohue raised £300 towards the total.

The Manor Academy teacher said he was so proud of what they had achieved and their amazing positive attitude.

He said the success could see the run becoming an annual event.

Mr Grainger added: “As a result of the Manchester attack I felt it was necessary that as a school, we supported the victims and their families as much as possible.

"I decided that a charity two-mile fun run would be an easy way for pupils to raise money and donate this to the Manchester Emergency Fund.

“Pupils at both Manor and Pictor Academy came together with more than 200 pupils and staff taking part.

At present we have raised nearly £1,000, however there is still more to collect therefore I believe we will potentially raise £1,300 in total which for a small school setting is amazing.

“Many of our pupils have a wide variety of Special Educational Needs and to have the confidence to ask members of their local community for sponsorship donations is a huge step forward for some.

"Pupils completed the run/ walk with an extremely positive attitude and were all fully aware of why we were doing this.

"“I am extremely proud of all pupils and staff who took part in this event, it was a huge success. I will now be looking to run this event annually.”
