TORRENTIAL rain on Saturday didn't dampen the spirits at the biggest party in Stretford - the annual Picnic in the Park at Victoria Park.

The free community, run by Friends of Victoria Park Streford, is in its eighth year and continues to grow in size and stature.

The crowds swelled to more than a thousand with families enjoying the stalls, including community groups Victoria Park PTA, and 23rd Stretford Scouts, as well as a police van and fire engine.

They enjoyed musical entertainment and a variety of stalls.

In the tea room there was a bake off competition and cake sale for those who wanted to take a break from the party on the main field.

The bands went down a treat, with Picnic in the Park regular Ryan Jarvis starting the day, before Bolton punk band Maize Bound turned up the volume.

Upcoming Irish band the Hatchlings charmed the crowd. Other performers included performers Stephen McCusker, the Sound Marshalls, and Le Mons Tout and young performer Kevin, aged 12, who did some acoustic covers.

Headliners Manchester band The Marivaux finished the day off with the crowd wanting more.

There was a visit from the Mayor, Cllr Judith Lloyd, who chatted with the crowd and described the day as a great community success.

The event was sponsored by Gallaghers, Spie and Electricity North West.

Fiona McDonald Naughton, from the picnic committee, said: "We were worried that the day would be poorly attended as the rain was so bad but it was definitely going to go ahead, as people kept telling us they were coming whatever the weather.

"Stretford did us proud, people brought their picnics and gazebos and enjoyed the day despite the rain.

"We keep it simple, try and keep those involved local, and make the most of our friendly Stretford spirit. A brilliant day.".
