VENUE and council bosses have defended noise levels at Rihanna’s booming Old Trafford concert, blaming ‘atmospheric conditions’ for carrying the sound across the city.

Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC), who hosted the Bajan star’s concert last night, confirmed that a small number of complaints had been made about noise levels.

Twitter erupted last night with residents complaining that the music could be heard clearly in their sitting rooms.

And it wasn’t just people living in the immediate vicinity of the grounds affected by the booming bass, with reports the Please Don’t Stop the Music singer could be heard on the other side of the city, as far as Failsworth and Oldham.

Some residents said the music was so loud it even 'shook' their homes.

Trafford Council and Lancashire County Cricket Club said they are proud to be able to welcome international artists like Rihanna to Trafford, with ‘priority being for concert goers to have a safe and enjoyable concert’.

The council and the venue wanted to assure residents that the level of sound was monitored before and throughout the concert in the surrounding area and that noise levels were ‘compliant with the acceptable levels as laid out in the licence provided by the council to allow the concert to go ahead’.

A Trafford Council spokesperson said: “We take our residents’ concerns seriously and monitored the sound levels closely to ensure they were within acceptable levels. Several tests were done at various areas in and around the venue to make sure the sound levels were acceptable.”

A spokesperson for LCCC said: “We also monitored the sound levels to make sure we were compliant. Due to atmospheric conditions, the sound can carry quite far and we do try to mitigate this as much as possible.”

The concert also overran by eight minutes, which the venue was made aware of shortly before the artist went on stage.

LCCC said, it at this point, it considered its options, but felt that due to potential crowd upset, and the safety issues this may cause, to allow the concert to overrun by eight minutes.

The venue informed both Trafford Council and Greater Manchester Police of its decision and because of potential safety issues, both organisations supported this decision.

LCCC has today been in contact with the organisers of the Beyoncé concert that is due to take place on Tuesday July 5, to stress the importance of the concert finishing on time and have received assurances from the organiser already.
