THE world has been mourning the passing of Muhammad Ali – not least Stretford residents lucky enough to meet the boxing legend in his heyday.

Muhammad Ali died on Friday June 3 at the age of 74 in hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

The three-time world heavyweight champion had been suffering from a respiratory illness, a condition that was complicated by Parkinson's disease.

As news of his death broke, Stretford residents took to social media to share their memories of Ali’s visit to Stretford Mall almost 40 years ago.

‘The Greatest’ visited a supermarket in Stretford on 12 October, 1971 as part of a promotional tour with Ovaltine.

He was at the height of his fame, having competed in the so-called ‘Fight of the Century’ with Joe Frazier just six months before.

The buzz created was unexpected and thousands stormed the mall to the catch a glimpse of the star – the appearance even had to be cut short because of the hype.

Sharing their experiences on Facebook group ‘Remembering Stretford’, Caroline Leigh said: “My Mum and Gran went to the Arndale with me in my prism to try to see him. It was too busy, so they gave up. Luckily upon leaving the Arndale they ended up coming face to face with him. He said I was a beautiful baby! What a sad day.”

Barry Howarth, who paid tribute to the star with a profile pic of Ali, said: “I was there although I only saw the back of his head.”

Robert Gooch posted: “R.I.P. Muhammed Ali / Cassius Clay, I remember the day he came to open Stretford precinct, sleep well big guy.”
