TRAFFORD employees rewound the clock for a ‘back to school’ event with a twist last night.

Mark Pearson, of Trafford Leisure, decided to hold a ‘sports day’ at Talbot Centre, off Great Stone Road, to boost funds for the upcoming CEO Sleepout, which aims to tackle homelessness.

Trafford Council employees, councillors, employees from Stretford Sports Village and Altrincham Leisure Centre and Stretford High School were all invited to take part in exchange for a donation.

More than 40 people signed up to take their chances on the sports field on Thursday May 12 and in teams, competed in variety of games, including the Egg and Spoon Race, Three Legged Race, Tug of War, Assault Course, Connect Four, and the aptly named ‘Sleeping Bag Race’.

After a tough battle, the Altrincham Leisure Centre team emerged victorious and crowned champions.

Duty manager Mark said: “It’s something fun for us all to get involved with, something light-hearted to help raise money for a great cause.”

The first Manchester CEO Sleepout will take place this Monday, May 16, with more 100 senior business and community leaders sleeping out on the pitch at Emirates Old Trafford to raise funds for homeless projects across the city.

Theresa Grant, CEO of Trafford Council, is one of the execs taking part on Monday and money raised at the sports day will help towards her fundraising total.

Theresa and fellow CEO Sleepout participant Jo Cherrett, chief operating officer of Trafford Leisure, joined the teams at last night’s sports day and tried their hand at tug-of-war.

Funds have also been raised by partners through a charity quiz, dress down days, meal with the leader, and a ‘guess the weight’, with sweets donated by Russell Swift. So far, around £2,000 has been raised and Theresa is currently in fourth place for the highest total in Manchester.

She said: “Homelessness is an issue that cannot be ignored; by signing up to take part in the sleepout on May 16, I hope I can play a small part in in an event that aims to make a big difference.”
