DOG walkers in Sale have slammed the state of Worthington Park.

The park was awarded a green flag for 2017/18 but visitors to the park complained of over flowing bins and hedges, broken glass and locked toilets.

Christine Gaffney walks her dog there regularly. She said: "It just looks a mess. It has recently been awarded a green flag but if they had done the inspection recently it certainly wouldn't have passed.

"This park is used by a lot of children and dogs and I am concerned they are going to get hurt - the fallen leaves are just piling higher and higher - not only this but it is also a danger to foxes. They eat the food from the overflowing bins where there are also dog-poo bags on the top - the foxes pull these out and eat them."

A spokesperson for the One Trafford Partnership said:

“We are committed to maintaining a high standard within all our parks in the borough. The 2017 green flag was awarded following a visit by a Green Flag mystery shopper who praised the park for its cared for appearance and high standards. A winter work programme is now scheduled to commence in mid-November when the hedges will be cut and leaves cleared. In addition, a winter improvement plan has been discussed with the Friends of Worthington Park which will see large overgrown shrubs pruned down to a manageable size.

"As of Monday November 6 the public toilets opened Monday to Friday. We apologise for the temporary closure of the toilets and for any inconvenience caused, which was due to human error in scheduling staffing. The relocation of the council’s depot has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the park’s operating arrangements.

"We empty over 800 litter bins a day and work hard to keep the borough a clean and attractive place to live and work. However, we acknowledge that litter bins in Worthington Park have not been emptied as they should and we apologies for this. We would encourage anyone who sees a full litter bin to please report it at https://my.trafford.gov.uk or call 03330 035865.”

Upon a visit to the park on November 11 the park toilets were still locked.
