A FATHER and son duo crossed the finish line in first and second place at Manchester Airport’s Run the Runway – their first ever race together – and now have their sights set on the Boston Marathon.

Thirteen-year-old Zac Gaillemin was first across the line at the 6k race on the bank holiday weekend, coming in at an impressive time of 22 minutes and three seconds, closely followed by his proud dad Olly.

They live in Sale and are members of Sale Harriers but have never been able to compete together before as they run in different age categories.

It’s always been Olly’s dream to compete in the Boston Marathon so after winning the first prize of two British Airways flights to Boston, an entry at next year’s event in the USA is a very real possibility.

Asked if he had allowed Zac, the youngest ever winner of the four-year event, to take the honours and cross the finishing line first, Olly said: “No not at all, it was just a youthful burst to the finish that clinched the race for him. It was a fantastic feeling to compete together and we are just thrilled with the prize.”

More than 180 serious and fun runners registered for the race which was started by television presenter Eamonn Holmes. There was also a family fun day under Concorde at the Runway Visitor Park, and a race warm up with Global Grooves, a Brazilian drumming and dancing group based in Manchester.

The event raised more than £3,500 which will be divided equally between Flying Start, British Airways’ global charity partnership with Comic Relief and Manchester Airport’s nominated charity CLIC Sargent the UK's leading cancer charity for children and young people.
