SALE resident Leah Walker and her friends have launched a fundraising drive for St Ann's Hospice, to thank the centre for the wonderful care it provided for her father at the end of his life.

Leah's dad, Mike Walker, died of cancer at the age of 66 in July at St Ann's.

Leah and her sister Carrie Burke say the care he received there was 'amazing'.

They said: "They made Dad comfortable, had banter with him, gave him gin and tonic and ice cream when he would eat nothing else and generally made his and many other lives bearable."

They threw themselves into fundraising after learning that St Ann’s has to raise £16,000 a day to keep its hospices going.

On March 18, Manchester BMX Club put on a race at Platt Fields to boost St Ann's which raised more than £1600. Leah's nine-year-old son, Harry, rides at the Manchester BMX Club track at Fallowfield.

Leah and a group of her friends have set up a Justgiving page and are tackling a series of fundraisers.

On March 19 they completed the St Ann's Obstacolour Run, while ten of them are competing in Born Survivor in May.

Other events line up are a 10K race, the St Ann's Midnight Walk and the Tough Mudder.

Leah's children, Harry and Millie, are getting involved with a fundraising own clothes day at school.
