ST ANNE’S CE Primary School in Sale was built 153 years ago.

Head teacher, Jane Brahney, learned that the writer, Chris King, had written about other schools so she commissioned him to produce one about St Anne’s.

It took him 18 months to put together The Story of St Annes School.

It includes 160 pictures, the oldest of which shows the first headmaster, Edward Yates, standing by the door shortly after the Trinity Road school was built in 1863.

”It is a beautiful, child friendly book and it’s all in verse,” said Mrs Brahney.

She herself has written the Afterword, also in verse.

Mrs Brahney continued: “The latest pictures show every child who is in the school today and every current member of staff.”

She was amazed to discover in information about the school’s heads, that she was the first head teacher who was a woman..

“The pictures indicate that the children didn’t wear uniforms until the mid 1970. In 1981 some wore green and some wore grey.”

For the past 30 years, the children have worn bottle green jumpers with grey trousers or pinafore dresses and a red and green tie.

The original school is now the church hall. The replacement infant and junior schools were built in 1984 and were linked by a hall in 1991.

Although an incendiary device hit the church spire in 1939, the school was unaffected.
