FREEMASONS across Altrincham and Sale are celebrating a record year of giving.

The society has donated more than £250,000 to charities and deserving causes in Cheshire during 2016.

“This must make us the most altruistic group in Cheshire,” said veteran accountant Stephen Blank, from Altrincham. Stephen leads a membership of more than 5,000 Freemasons across the province of Cheshire as their Provincial Grand Master.

Nationally, Freemasons have handed out more than £100 million to charities and community groups across Britain.

In a bid to re-launch the image of Freemasonry he leads, Stephen is adopting a mode of openness and transparency to enable the organisation to survive in modern times.

“Our challenge ahead is to raise greater awareness of how Freemasons support the local community through a myriad of personal and charitable initiatives,” he said.

Altrincham and Sale’s senior Freemason, Adrian Davies, said: “Our donations this year include giving thousands cuddly Teddy bears to comfort children in the accident and emergency unit at Wythenshawe and other hospitals, £500 towards the David Lewis epilepsy centre in Wilmslow, and £1,100 to Stockdales residential support centre in Sale.”
